Medicinally, the rhizome is a stomachic and carminative when taken in small doses. In larger doses, it is an emetic. The plant is used as a remedy for flatulence, colic, dyspepsia and intermittent fevers.

The dried fruit is considered to have anthelmintic astringent, carminative, alterative and stimulant properties. It has been employed in India since ancient times, and is administered as a powder.

A decoction of the root is given for certain disorders of the urinary organs, inflammatory conditions of the chest and for colic. It is applied externally on fractures and other inflamed organs. A paste of the root is made with honey and is used to treat skin disease.

The seed of this plant is a powerful aphrodisiac. When taken with bees honey it enhances sexual appetite. The usage of this plant is dangerous as an overdose could kill a patient.

The root is considered a cholagogue and diaphoretic. It is useful in treating acute congestion of the liver, laryngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia and other fevers. An infusion of the plant is given for itching.

The wood is a bitter tonic and a decoction of it is used as a remedy for or to prevent, tetanus. The root has antiseptic properties and is often used for dressing wounds and ulcers.
