Ekaweriya Ekaweriya Rauvolfia serpentia

In recent years, Rauvolfia and its preparations have become important therapeutic agents, both as anti-hypertensives and as sedatives. Rauvolfia is an important source of the active alkaloid, reserpine, which is also extracted commercially from the roots of R. vomitoria and R. tetraphylla; reserpine's content of R. vomitoria is twice that of R. serpentina. Resperpine has a depressant action on central nervous system and induces sedation and a lowering of blood pressure, accompanied by bradycardi.

The bark and roots are used for fever, heart disease, acute bronchitis, pneumonia, malarial affections and chronic rheumatoid conditions.

Small quantities of castor seed are used in the villages as a mild laxative for children. The seeds are made into a paste or poultice and are reported to be applied to sores, boils and gouty or rheumatic swellings.

The root is a bitter tonic, stomachic, laxative and galactagogue. It is taken as an infusion or decoction for indigestion, fever and anasarca. The bark is a bitter tonic and stomachic and is considered useful in the treatment of fever and indigestion.

Eucalyptus oil is used locally as an antiseptic, especially in the treatment of infections of the upper respiratory tract and in certain skin diseases.
