There are several properties existing in a drug. When a drug works efficiently, it is said to be 'Potent'. This potency is known as 'Virya'. It is the result of Bhautic composition of the drug. When potency of the drug is lost, it looses its effectiveness and is of no use.

'Virya' is similar in nature to modern science's description of 'energy'.

In Ayurveda, there are two types of energy. 'Potential' and 'Kinetic'. The energy that is potentially present in food or drug, is known as 'Sita Virya'. This is hot by nature. The cold energy, 'Usna Virya', is readily released during digestion. The Bhautic factor that controls 'Usna Virya' is Agni.
