The foundation of Ayurveda is based on the principle of Tridosha. Whereas Panchabhuta is the structural entity of the body and Tridosha maintains the functional entity.

Humans are primarily under the influence of three elements. They are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. When these three are in a balanced state one's health can be said to be sound. However, when the tridoshas are unbalanced, one is diseased.

Vata originate when space and air combine. They are mobile in nature, and responsible for division of cells and activities of the nervous system. Pitta is born when water is added with fire. They are thus hot and smooth and control all metabolic activities. When the molecules of water and earth mix, Kapha is born. Shape and form of the body is thus determined.

Modern science, today believe in the existence of these three elements. In the last few of wcated in the head similarities with the three elements have been found. The doshas are now compared to Acetylcholine, Catecholamine and Histamine that are found in the body.
