According to Ayurveda, there are seven tissue systems in the body. They are known as Dhatu. Contemporary medical science has recently discovered this.

The saptadhatu's or seven tissues, maintain the form of the body. All the structures of the body are madeup of these basic tissues. Each dhatu is under the control of one of the three 'doshas'.

These after tastes also affect a person's constitution
Ruled by 'Kapha' or water. It makes the person cheerful, happy and nourishes 'Rakta' (blood).

Rakta is primarily responsible for taking care of our complexion and 'Mamsa' (muscle) is taken care of which is governed by 'Pitta' or fire.

Strengthens the body. A person of good health thus develops strong muscles in neck, shoulder and thigh. Attends to the needs of 'Meda' (fat) under the influence of 'Kapha' or water.

A well-lubricated tissue system along with oily hair and efficient eyes, is a sign of good health. Softness of the body is also looked after. The governing dosha is 'Kapha', nourishes 'Asthi'.

'Vayu' or air rules it. Supports the body by nourishing 'Majja'. Anyone who has large feet and is strong can be said to have good Asthi. He is also consistent, stable and hard working.

The governing dosha is 'Kapha'. Makes a man enjoy life by strengthening his body. He has strong joints, and is of a sharp and clear mind. Looks after 'Shukra'.

Reproductive needs is its concern. Is associated with patience, enjoyment and body strength. 'Kapha' is its controlling force.

Ayurveda divides Dhatus into two distinct groups. They are 'Sthayi or Poshya' and 'Asthayi or Poshaka'. Basic tissues are used to strengthen the body by the Sthayi dhatus.

These dhatus need to be supported, maintained and properly nourished. This is done by the Asthayi dhatus.

It is important to take note that, the dhatus are always being formed and destroyed.
