Along with dhatus and doshas, malas are the three elements that make up a person. It deals with the waste materials like feces, urine, sweat, spit and others.

Purisha (feces) is responsible for supporting Vayu and Agni. As a result, a proper body temperature is maintained. When not in sound condition, there is gas, headache and constipation.

Mutra (urine) eliminates water from the urinary bladder. If not functioning properly, several ailments like bladder pain, fever or dehydration can crop up. For perfect health Ayurveda suggests that one must avoid alcohol, excessive sex, fright and intake of less water.

Sweda (sweat) is also responsible for cooling the body temperature. Blood is purified and excess fat is eliminated. However, if someone sweats more than what is normal, then it is detrimental to his health.

According to the principles of Ayurveda, malas are created due to damaged condition of the doshas. When the doshas reach a condition from where they cannot be revived, waste products or malas are born.
